Can a transit route be considered outside of its environmental context? Questions raised by an optical guidance system installed on buses

چکیده
The desire to enhance the attractiveness of public transit services constitutes a factor of development as well as innovation in this field. Such a motivation is typically aimed at improving the performance of systems while holding costs under control. Against this backdrop, we have analyzed a docking assistance device installed on conventional articulated buses and placed into operation in two of France's metropolitan areas. This analysis has targeted the impact of such a system on the bus driving activity, in order to evaluate the extent to which the device actually provides assistance versus the constraints i t is capable of introducing for the driver, along with the potential ensuing risks. Results reveal that both the system set-up conditions and environmental characteristics (in particular movements of the roadway's other vehicles and bus passengers) serve to determine the system's capacity to function as a real assistance tool or, on the other hand, to create an obstacle to implementing effective and safe driving techniques.

Transit Signal Priority: Proposing a Novel Algorithm to Decrease Delay and Environmental Impacts in BRT Route Intersections
Intersections are considered as the most critical parts of the bus rapid transit (BRT) system. Transit signal priority is one of the efficient solutions to reduce BRT fleet delays at intersections. The aim of this study is to propose a new algorithm to decrease the BRT fleet delays at actuated intersections, while reducing the negative impacts on different approaches. The adaptive strategy is a...

متن کاملA Multi-objective Transmission Expansion Planning Strategy: A Bilevel Programming Method
This paper describes a methodology for transmission expansion planning (TEP) within a deregulated electricity market. Two objective functions including investment cost (IC) and congestion cost (CC) are considered. The proposed model forms a bi-level optimization problem in which upper level problem represents an independent system operator (ISO) making its decisions on investment while in the l...
متن کاملA Methodology for Bus Network Design
This thesis develops a methodology for solving the bus network design problem (BNDP) in which one seeks to determine the best configuration of bus routes and their frequencies, given information on the bus transit demand, the street network, the available resources and the operational constraints. The proposed methodology follows a heuristic approach and consists of two main components route ge...
